I got a new sketchbook at Christmas and I'm slowly filling it with nonsensical things.

Drawings and collages not related to school.

I made a trip to the Sally Anne and got some old National Geographics. The photos in the pre 1980's issues are so much better. The colours are beautiful.

And fellow photographer Laurence, Amanda, and I are going to shoot some photos on Thursday probably. Laurence just died her hair blue/green . . . it's pretty awesome and should be fun to capture on film.

Lunch with Alyssa

I had lunch at Santropol with Alyssa a few weeks ago and snapped a couple of pics of her:

It was seriously ridiculously cold that day if you can't tell! Anyway, Alyssa is currently interning at WORN fashion journal in Toronto. Here's a little description from there website:

More snow pictures + random. My roommates and I all got sick at the same time (always at the most convenient time!) so the floor has been littered with exam notes and tissues. These few weeks at the end of every term always brings about the question "Why did I even go to university (disgruntled sigh)" but soon it will all be over and we'll be eating christmas cookies and ushering in the new year! Exciting.

Today I picked up the film from my shoot with Steff and I really liked how they turned out! Steff's an up-and-comer at Dulcedo Model Management and she was the loveliest girl to work with.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

I feel at home in Montreal, but sometimes it's nice to go back to Toronto.

It was nice to spend some time with my little sister who has just moved to Toronto for school. We got to take a look around Kensington market and do some shopping.

And I had a nice two Thanksgiving family dinners.

Kids get the best clothes (They light up when you walk!)

I'm told this is where the squirrels live and sit up in the trees and eat.

It's always nice to see the Freemasons.

I got some great little old glass jars at a nice fall yard sale, and a little record.

And a new favourite dress from Black Market Vintage in Toronto.

I missed out on my favourite holiday tradition this year, watching "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving".

I couldn't find it, but I did find this. Which is appropriate since the countdown has begun and it's only two week's till Halloween.

We're pulling out all the stops this year.

The Polaroid film I've been using lately has been pretty finicky, it's been kind of a struggle to determine how to get all of the settings exactly right on my SX-70. The film is the PX 70 FF Color Shade from the Impossible Project website and although they suggest just putting the light slider to the middle I've found that to be wayyy too light for my liking. Plus what's with those weird crystal speckle things? Anyway enough complaining! I have two more packs to experiment with so hopefully I'll be able to make something look OK.

The night ended on a great note with an amazing performance by the Dirty Projectors who played at Le National (more photos of the concert coming later). I've finally left my teen years behind, and although it's a bit scary, I feel like I have accomplished so much within the past year. Hopefully another amazing year is coming my way!

First few shots with my new 35mm film camera, an Arette BW I ordered off of this etsy.

This is what the camera looks like:

The colors came out really beautiful (none of these are edited). Not sure if it was the film or processing but either way I adore it!

The first few days of class have been pretty good, I had Intro to Buddhism yesterday as well as Film in History. The film class is exactly what I'd hoped it would be. Basically the special topic is "The Individual v. Society: Hollywood films from 1930-1970" with emphasis on the search for the American Dream. We're watching films such as The Public Enemy, Casablanca, Easy Rider, Rebel Without a Cause, etc. Can you believe this is school?

Amanda came back to Montreal yesterday so today we did a little stop motion together. Adam has been working on a sweet little tune to go to it so it should be up soon. The weather was really amazing today, pretty warm with lots of wind. Here are some of the stills:

About a week ago I shot some photographs for Bird's of North America (as I mentioned in a previous post). I thought I would share some of the photos!

There are a few more here. And in other news, I FINALLY was able to get a Mamiya C220! I've been watching Ebay for literally three months and had given up on paying less than $300 for C220 or C330 but today I checked again and there was one for about half that! So excited. Also, fall was definitely in the air yesterday and I cannot wait for the heat to leave and give way to pretty leaves and scarves and mittens. I'm also a little bit excited for this semester in school as well since I am taking more general classes, such as intro to Buddhism and Greek mythology!

Magic from the Attic

On a recent trip to visit my grandmother in St. Louis, I was given an tenor banjo that she had kept in her attic for roughly 70 years. It is an old Wurlitzer, and was given to her by its previous owner when she was 14 years old in cincinnati, ohio. I think it is probably from the 1910's or 20's. I had someone do all that they can to restore it, and I am beginning to learn to play. I am glad that someone is finally using it; it is such a beautiful, classic instrument.

As some of you may or may not know, I am the editor of a small magazine called Dousee, which focuses on showcasing young talent in different artistic fields (mainly photography but I also include writing, bloggers, interviews, and illustration).

[Sorry for not updating in so long. It's not for lack of subject matter (Art shows, travels, summer adventures, catching up with friends & great thrifting finds) but for a lack of camera-cable. I managed to remember the camera but have no way to get the photos onto the computer. So until that is remedied, I have some posts coming off of what I have on my desktop.]

Since I'll be staying in the same apartment for another year, I feel like it needs a make-over to keep it feeling new, and livable.

Along with a new roommate, one that I'm lucky enough to know this time- before moving in together, I'm hoping for some new decorative additions.

All in all it's been a pretty tiring weekend, but it was definitely worth it. Adam and I will probably write a much longer review discussing the bands and such, as well as post some of the band photos that I took yesterday and today.

Hello, all . . .

It has been a while since my last posting! I've been quite busy traveling about (I've been to Maine and Ottawa in the last month), teaching guitar lessons, starting a novel, celebrating my 24th birthday, and studying for my MA exams, which begin September 3rd. I'm currently working my way through reading Famous Last Words by Timothy Findley, a rather excellent novel by a Canadian writer. It follows an imaginary American ex-pat writer during WWII through his friendship with some very-real Fascists (including Ezra Pound and the abdicated King of England, Edward VIII). The premise of the work is unique and compelling; check it out!

I have just posted a couple of guitar videos on YouTube and created my own channel. The videos are of the same song--an instrumental piece I wrote called "White Lilies / Topsy Turvy." The original plan was to combine these and some other videos into one with multiple camera angles, but too little time, too little skill, and too pathetic a computer came between me and my goal. So instead, I've posted two for your viewing pleasure. Let me know what you think!

Back in action

Hey readers!

After little spout of technical difficulties (hem hem) we have so much to catch up on. First of all, Lincoln 9 (the apartment itself) is no longer in existence. Summertime has brought on a miserable heat wave along with the departure of roommates. However, this blog will still remain with its original authors writing about our daily art escapades.

Anyway enough talk, here are some instaxes from today (I finally ordered more film, however I think the rollers in my camera are broken / dirty so it produces a magical fairy like presence as Amanda would put it!

Above are Valerie & Valerie, two girls from Austria who are staying with us via Couch Surfing. Couch Surfing is a really awesome website Adam and I discovered a couple weeks ago where you let people from all over the world crash on your couch and in return your get "feedback" which gives you a better chance of staying at other people's places! Anyway, Valerie & Valerie are the first guests we have and so far their visit has been really successful.

Amanda and ice cream -- a staple for this heat wave.

An awesome Cosmos book (it's huge) that I got in Maine for $20. Amazing.

Polaroid versions of some of the large format photography work that I've been doing the over the past few days.

The film is Polaroid fade-to-black, available at The Impossible Project website.

I really enjoy the tonal results that this film produces, however, I despise ripping apart the film to stop development. It gets really messy and there are tons of fingerprints on the inside of the film. Actually maybe I'm just impatient haha. If you're the type of person that is really OCD about their film then this is probably a perfect product for you! I have 2 boxes left so maybe I can teach myself to be more careful. We shall see.

I got a new scanner in the mail today! It's a CanoScan 8800F, and it can scan both 35mm and medium format. Hooray! I will save so much money haha.

These negatives are dispersed across my second year of university.

Now I must actually do my last assignments so I can finish up this year; as of Tuesday I am free for the summer!

I finally got around to taking somewhat professional (and legible) looking photos of my embroidery work.

There doesn't seem to be much of a place for embroidery or craft in the art world of schools quite yet but it's definitely having a revival and gaining a lot of popularity.

Mostly I just like the obsessiveness and personal narrative in the making of it.
